To Abolish Chhaupadi in mid and far-western Region of Nepal

Project Background:

This project which will be carried out in partnership with KIRDARC and PEACEWIN aims to reduce the incidences of Chhaupadi in the Far and Mid-Western Regions of by 2017 in four districts contributing to the abolition of the practice in the regions. We expect to reach 40,000 beneficiaries in total; 10,000 per district where the core intervention will be implemented. Among the total beneficiaries we reach 70% will be girls and women and remaining 30% will be boys and men. In addition, 40% of the total beneficiaries will be from Doti and Dadeldhura, whereas 60tt of them will be from Kailali and Kanchanpur. By the end of the project community members including men and boys, traditional healers, community leaders and parents will have improved knowledge and attitudes towards the practice of Chhaupadi. Young people will possess the relevant life skills and knowledge to become advocates for the elimination of the Chhaupadi practice amongst their peers and community members. Local civil society organizations will have a greater capacity to respond to incidences of Chhaupadi and other forms of gender based violence. Their work will also be more coordinated and joined up. Youth-led advocacy efforts will also result in a greater commitment on the part of District Level government to eliminate the practice. Key strategies to be utilized in the implementation of the project are; a youth-led peer education model, engaging young men and boys, creating an enabling and protective environment for young women through a holistic community based approach, strengthening the capacity of community based civil society organizations and taking a rights- based approach to the problem which ensures the participation of young women. The project will have the direct intervention in 4 districts; Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali and Kanchanpur in the Far-western Region. Similarly, the project will work through Civil Society Organization in 3 districts, Dailekh, Kalikot and Accham in the Mid- Western Region.

Relevance of the action:

Nepal is an underdeveloped country. Among many underdeveloped places of Nepal ,Far western Development Region is mostly underdeveloped .There are many social evils, domestic violence, superstition and ill- practices still existing in this region of Nepal. Due to many religious & social causes women are unknown about their human and legal rights. Among these social evils the burning issue in this region is the Chhaupadi Practice regarded as the major problem. Dadeldhura is one of the district of the Far Western Development Region among the 9 districts of Far Western region mainly suffering from the Chhaupadi Practice.

The Chhaupadi practice is treated as a sign in this Region. Women face different kinds of mental, religious socio-economical & political problems during menstruation period which makes them to be treated as secondary people.

In our working 10 VDCs of Dadeldhura district the cause of Chhaupadi Practice has adverse effect on mental, religious, social, economic & political status of women. Owing to the social injustice done to the women during menstruation& Pregnancy period causes many health hazards in women. Uterine prolapsed, lower abdominal pain ,malnutrition, sexual diseases, pneumonia to the children while staying in the cow shed, snake bite, rape, robbery & fire are the main outcomes of this system to the women. This System stands on the support of religious & social misbelieve.

To abolish Chhaupadi practice in Dadeldhura district KIRDARC Nepal starting different public awareness programs with mutual cooperating with different government & Non –government organizations and in partnership with UNTF /Restless Development.
